Bring math to life through the exciting world of manufacturing. In this collaborative STEM experience, students become production engineers as they design, build, test, and optimize a manufacturing process. Along the way, they'll apply grade-level math concepts to solve authentic challenges involving patterns, data, measurement, efficiency, and problem-solving.

Using MindLabs' interactive augmented reality experiences, hands-on activities, and integrated digital notebook, students explore how manufacturers use mathematics every day to make informed decisions, improve quality, and increase productivity. As they collect and analyze data, identify bottlenecks, and refine their processes, students develop both mathematical confidence and essential workplace skills like collaboration, communication, and critical thinking.

Perfect for classrooms, makerspaces, after-school programs, and workforce development initiatives, Math & Manufacturing helps students see how math powers innovation and connects directly to real-world careers.

Full Description

What if math wasn't just something students solved, but something they used to build, improve, and innovate?

In Math & Manufacturing, students join the MindLabs team as they step inside a modern manufacturing facility where every decision depends on mathematical thinking. Guided by a cast of engaging characters, students work alongside Anne, an Industrial Engineer who keeps the production line running smoothly, Spec, the meticulous Quality Engineer who insists every product meets exact specifications, Jolene, the expert Machinist who knows every machine inside and out, and the rest of the team as they solve real-world manufacturing challenges.

Using augmented reality, collaborative engineering activities, and hands-on problem solving, students collect data, identify patterns, analyze efficiency, and improve production processes. Along the way, they'll discover that manufacturing isn't just about building products. It's about using mathematics, logic, creativity, and teamwork to solve complex problems.

As students progress through the unit, they'll explore concepts including coordinate grids, measurement, graphing, data analysis, patterns, algorithms, optimization, and quality control while gaining insight into the careers that bring modern manufacturing to life.

Designed for grades 3-5, Math & Manufacturing blends immersive storytelling with standards-aligned instruction to create meaningful learning experiences that connect classroom mathematics to the real world.

Whether used in classrooms, makerspaces, after-school programs, museums, or workforce development initiatives, students leave with a deeper understanding of how mathematics powers the products they use every day and the careers they may one day pursue.

Anne

Meet Anne, Your Students' Guide to Manufacturing

Every great story needs a guide, and in Math & Manufacturing, that guide is Anne.

Anne is a robot Industrial Engineer who oversees a busy pixel art factory, where every product is created tile by tile, color by color, and coordinate by coordinate. As orders arrive, Anne relies on mathematics, engineering, and teamwork to keep the production line running smoothly.

Throughout the unit, students work alongside Anne as they solve manufacturing challenges, explore how production lines operate, and discover that every machine has an important role to play. Along the way, they'll meet the rest of Anne's team, each representing a different career in modern manufacturing and demonstrating how collaboration and mathematical thinking drive innovation.

By following Anne's story, abstract math concepts become meaningful, engaging, and connected to the real world.
